库伯美术馆推出2020年首度展览“离相”,这是自2018年展览“极中”之后的又一场艺术家集体亮相的展览。“离相”取自佛经,原意是指不受对象的形相约束而进行无为的布施,泛指对导致实践方法与本来目的相悖的那些原因的反思。在这里,我们将它作为一种内在机制:根据当下的时代情境,以一种新的角度来理解并重构亚洲文化。这种机制将可能唤醒沉睡在历史中的那些真正的传统美学基因。

Cube Art Museum is honored to launch the first group exhibition “Abscission of Appearance” in 2020, This is the first collective exhibition of artists since the outbreak. The original meaning of "Abscission of Appearance" comes from Buddhist Scripture, and generally refers to the reflection on the reasons that lead to the contradiction between the practice method and the original purpose. Here, we regard it as an internal mechanism: to understand and reconstruct Asian culture from a new perspective according to the current situation of the times. This mechanism will probably awaken those real traditional aesthetic genes sleeping in history.

佛家有“筏喻”:佛以教法如筏,渡河既了,则筏当舍。“河”所比喻的是在无始无终的时间中的某一段际遇,“筏”寓示着我们文明的成果,这一成果具有其阶段性,它是主体性与客观际遇的杂多发生交织而产生的对抗、融合或共同推进——是一切有利于这一综合行径的系统与法则。事实上,文明的发展所追求的正是这一贯穿始终的永恒性,它是以上这一法则而又不是其中任何具体的法则,更不是在任何时期下具体而丰硕的果实;在如今,新的媒介与技术所承载的观念取代了我们以往借以直达彼岸的那些传统,艺术家作为“弃筏者”的同时也是“造筏者”,这关系到我们如何重审传统,以及在无限的未来中,我们该以何种姿态来观照整个我们置身其中且不断延续的历史。 

Buddhism has the “Simile of the Raft”: Buddhism teachings are like a raft. After crossing a river, the raft should be abandoned. “River” refers to a certain period of circumstances in the time course with no beginning and no end. “Raft” implies our civilization achievement, which is periodical. It is the confrontation, integration or common advancement resulting from the interweaving of subjectivity and objective circumstances – it is all the systems and principles conducive to this comprehensive practice. In fact, what the development of civilization pursues is this eternity that runs through all the time. It is the above principles but not any specific principle, and it is not the concrete and productive fruit at any time. Nowadays, the concepts embodied by the new media and technologies have replaced those traditions that we used to rely on to reach the other shore. Artists are “raft abandoners” as well as “raft makers”, which relates to how we re-examine the traditions and how we should view the whole history in which we are in and that sustains into the infinite future.

本次展览主题“离相”一语双关,其一意是要离“法相”,即我们需要甄别哪些是“脱河之筏”以便舍弃之,其二意是要破除“离”之相,即在舍弃“脱河之筏”的基础上不可执于将如何发现问题并得知可通过造筏解决问题的经验(一种不是经验的经验)一并舍去,这种类似应变机制的经验正如“当代性”对于艺术家的要求——不是将艺术视作某件孤立的作品,而是艺术作品的物理部分与它所处的时代紧密结合所形成的整体——艺术家是这个整体的作者。由此,“当代的艺术”指向一种处于这种全新的结构学分析下仍然有效的艺术,这种“有效”即指从这整体中诞生了对历史具有拓展性的事物。艺术家们正在经历一个无限禅机的时代,以往那些仅需伟大与激进便能载入史册的行动,在如今已转变为一种日常,它是无时无刻不在进行着的革命。

“Abscission of Appearance” as a title with a double meaning, one meaning is to give up the raft out of the river, another meaning is that we shouldn’t give up the experience of how to find problems and how to know that problems can be solved by building rafts, this kind of experience similar to the strain mechanism is just like the requirement of "Contemporariness" for artists -- reviewing the structure of art works, art is not regarded as an isolated work, but a whole formed by the close combination of the physical part of the work and the era it is in - the artist is the author of the whole. Therefore, "Contemporary Art" refers to an art that is still effective under this new structural analysis, which means that something with expansiveness to history is born from this whole. Artists are going through an era with infinite Zen. These actions that only need greatness and radicalism to be recorded in history have been transformed into a kind of daily life. It is a revolution that is going on all the time.
