Wong Ping participated in the group exhibition ‘Dream Baby Dream’ at Haus Mödrath. Curated by Gesine Borcherdt, a writer and editor of the art magazines BLAU and BLAU International in Berlin, as well as a curator at the Düsseldorf project space CAPRI, this exhibition features artists whose work evince a strong connection to childhood and youth, not just as a source of creative inspiration, but also as a metaphor for physical, psychological, and social conflicts. The interplay of the artists creates an atmosphere in which the dark sides of childhood and youth take on entirely new forms. On view is Wong Ping’s single channel animation, ‘Stop Peeping’ (2014).

About the institution

Haus Mödrath – Räume für Kunst in Kerpen is a center and meeting point for contemporary art, music and culture. It has a quite extraordinary history: When the manor house was built around 1830 it was mostly used privately, for residential purposes. It belonged to a village, which all but disappeared due to strip mining. The origin of the house is a mill that produced pigments dating back centuries.

Backed by a foundation, the house is funded by a collector from the region, who wishes to “remain anonymous in order to keep the focus on art, rather than cultivating a personal brand,” according to a spokesperson. In line with this, there will not be a permanent collection installed in the house, but rather, it will be a proper Kunsthalle, with rotating exhibitions organized by curators.

About the artist

Flashing, pop-like imagery; visual and auditory narrations that explicitly touch upon sex, politics and social relations; vibrant installations that extend into three dimensions of the artist’s fantastical animation world – these are but cornerstones of Wong Ping’s (b. 1984) practice. Discussing his observations of society, from teenage to adulthood, his work combines the crass and the colourful to mount a discourse around repressed sexuality, personal sentiments and political limitations. As one of Hong Kong’s most exciting emerging artists, his animations have been commissioned by M+, NOWNESS as well as Prada and he was awarded one of Perspective’s ’40 under 40’. His recent shows include, ‘One Hand Clapping’ at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum and ‘Songs for Sabotage’ at New Museum, New York.  Moreover, Wong held a residency at the Chinese Centre for Contemporary Art (CFCCA) and has held exhibitions internationally in Manchester, Hong Kong, Istanbul, Berlin and Paris, amongst other locations. His animation films have been presented at numerous festivals internationally, from Belgium and the UK to Mexico and Australia, and have been reviewed in LEAP, ArtAsiaPacific and other publications. Wong’s work is held in several permanent collections including M+, Hong Kong, KADIST, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, Fosun Art Foundation, Shanghai, amongst others. In 2018, He was the recipient of the inaugural Camden Arts Emerging Arts Prize.
